Annapolis: Reynolds Tavern Afternoon Tea

For the past few Christmases, our father has been surprising my sister and me with a stack of gift cards to local small businesses.

It's touching and sweet- his way of treating us as well as supporting the businesses we sometimes mention in passing. Reynold's Tavern is one of these places.

I've always wanted to try the afternoon tea here- mainly for the tiers of tiny desserts. I walk up to the door and read the menu almost any time I'm on Church Circle.

I've visited the pub and patio many times, but have always put off, for some reason, sitting down to a formal tea.

We finally made a sister date for a beautiful June weekday afternoon. We had no reservations- they were gently suggested for next time- but it was a quiet day and we were seated quickly.

I wanted to get a slice of quiche, as well as the dessert and sandwich assortment, so we split the Colonial High Tea. And added a Fried Green Tomato BLT.

My favorites were the Bakewell tart (almond and jam- I'm going to try to make this at home), the mini Shepherd's Pie (yes), and the scone. I hate mayonnaise so all finger sandwiches went to Farah.

After our tea and meal, which was lovely, the manager gave us a quick private tour of the building. There's lodging upstairs, a pub in the cellar, and a patio for happy hour, live music, and outdoor movies and events. The tea rooms are on the first floor.

More on the history of Reynold's here.

Next time I want the Queen Anne Tea, which includes a cheese plate plus rosé upgrade.

Farah got the chai tea; I got the Angel Falls Mist tea "named after the highest waterfall on Earth in the tropical jungles of Venezuela. A wildly exotic blend of strawberry and lemon."

There were a couple of tables seated when we arrived, but as soon as they left, I started taking pictures of the room shamelessly. I loved having a private tea parlor for a bit.
